Inside the GE9X

GE Aerospace’s engine for the Boeing 777X. Follow its core and bypass airflow, then select a component to see how it works.

GE9X engine cutaway Educational drawing of the GE9X architecture: a 16-blade composite fan, 3 booster stages, 11 high-pressure compressor stages, an annular combustor, 2 high-pressure turbine stages, and 6 low-pressure turbine stages. A shorter bypass cowl surrounds the forward engine, leaving the aft core exposed. An inner low-pressure shaft and an outer high-pressure shaft connect their respective rotors. Flow paths and non-fan blade counts are illustrative. Cutaway drew this model from public references without manufacturer CAD. The GE9X’s 134-inch (3.40 m) fan draws air into the engine, with most passing around the core through the bypass duct. GE gives an approximate bypass ratio of 10:1, or about 10 parts of bypass air for each part entering the core, by mass.

This educational cutaway follows the GE9X’s published architecture: 1 fan, 3 booster stages, 11 high-pressure compressor stages, a TAPS III combustor, 2 high-pressure turbine stages, and 6 low-pressure turbine stages.

The drawing shows all 16 fan blades and each rotor stage. Other blade and vane counts, spacing, profiles, nacelle contours, and internal dimensions are illustrative.

The drawing omits cooling, seals, accessory systems, and much of the casing. Moving dashes indicate flow direction only; their speed and spacing don’t represent airspeed or bypass ratio. This original illustration uses public references; manufacturer CAD wasn’t used.
